The thunderstorms that took Hampshire by storm this week were a sign that the seasons are changing. As we lead into autumn then winter, we too, are preparing our animals for the changes ahead.
Our herd of Hereford and Shorthorns are now hopefully all in calf having spent nine weeks running free with the bulls. As we all can feel the change in temperature there is much work to be done for our winter livestock management.
Those of us with two legs can generally wrap up warmer or go inside for a warm cuppa, but what can we do to ensure are cows are healthy and comfortable in winter? The answer is they will be kept warm inside too! We are now cleaning out all of the cattle sheds to give the cows shelter throughout these month. Once in the sheds they will be supplemented with silage, hay and cereals such as the barley we harvested in August to keep them in the best condition.
